André St. Clair, a.k.a André St. Clair Thompson, is an interdisciplinary artist: actor, performer, writer, and producer. He is currently a M.F.A. candidate in Acting at California Institute of the Arts. He holds a M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University/ Tisch School of the Arts and a B.A. in Sexuality and Society from Brown University.
Thompson is the recipient of support from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Student Fellowship, Brown University Creative Arts Council, CV Starr National Service Fellowship, and the Karen T. Romer Undergraduate Teaching and Research Assistantship. He is also an illustrious alumnus of A Better Chance (ABC).
Thompson is currently working on his solo-performance work, My Penis: A Work In Progress. Inspired by a staged performance of the Vagina Monologues, Thompson writes:
“My Penis is a performative ethnographic journey through which I interrogate essentialism and authenticity within identity formations. The piece brings up the intersections of class, race and (trans)nationality, and gender with sexuality being the focal point of reference. As an ethnographic piece some of the notions I am attempting to question are my own positioning/body within space and time. With that being the case I am constructing visual imagery through images and movement place within oral communication.”
In its first installment, My Penis received considerable support from Brown University. The next installation is lining up for Spring 2009.
